Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering was started at Main Campus , University of Kashmir ,in the year 2010 and was later shifted to Institute of Technology, Zakura Campus in the year 2014 as part of a Full-Fledged Engineering College. The Department has state of art teaching and lab. facilities and is at par with the leading engineering institutes of the UT. The Department has produced nine (9) B.Tech. Batches till now and the alumni's are working in leading industrial and educational institutes.

The Department of ECE, IoT, KU, was awarded the 'Advanced Communications 5G Research Lab' Setup Award, by D.O.T., Govt. of India. The lab funding is to the tune of Rs. 1 Crore. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) of the Government of India is setting up 100 5G labs across the country. The labs will be located in premier higher educational institutions and will test 5G applications in sectors like education, agriculture, and health. The labs will be a proving ground for technology providers to test their solutions for interoperability with third-party integrations and pre-validate them against current 3GPP standards. This will help speed up the innovation cycle and reduce time-to-market.

The Department of ECE, IoT, KU, has forwarded a proposal for an 'Advanced AI & ML Center'. The lab will have High Performance Computing (HPC) Workstations for AI applications, and also robotics equipment. The proposed funding is to the tune of Rs. 2.0 Crores. Funding will be done under MERU for RUSA 3.0.
